The Maha Kumbh has set a historic milestone as over 450 million devotees have taken a dip at Sangam in Prayagraj since the grand event began on January 13, according to the Uttar Pradesh government. Initially, the state had projected this number over 45 days, but it was achieved within just one month, with 15 days still remaining for the festival’s conclusion.

This year’s Kumbh Mela has redefined crowd management, sanitation, and digital facilitation through a blend of spiritual traditions and modern technology. The government is now gearing up for the upcoming Amrit Snan on February 12, 2025, marking the auspicious Magh Purnima Snan, which is believed to be associated with Guru Brahaspati and celestial blessings from Gandharva. To ensure seamless movement, the mela area will be designated a ‘no vehicle zone’ from the morning of February 11, 2025, permitting only essential services. Indian Railways is operating at full capacity, with 330 trains ferrying 1.25 million pilgrims on February 9, and an additional 130 trains departing by February 10 afternoon, the UP government said.

The government is taking all necessary precautions after the Mahakumbh Mela witnessed a tragic incident in January, where at least 30 people lost their lives and 60 others were injured in a stampede.

However, the Mahakumbh Mela has also witnessed a tragic incident, with at least 30 people losing their lives and 60 others injured in a stampede in January.

Sharing details, the UP government officials said that security has been a top priority, with a multi-tier system in place. AI-powered CCTV cameras, drone surveillance, and real-time analytics are being used to monitor the vast gathering. A digital token system has streamlined access to bathing ghats, reducing overcrowding, while special facilities have been introduced for senior citizens and differently-abled individuals. On February 10, 2025, President Droupadi Murmu participated in the Maha Kumbh, taking a holy dip at the Triveni Sangam and engaging with saints and devotees. Several high-profile leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, have also taken part in the spiritual festivities. Bollywood celebrities and Indian sports figures have further added to the grandeur, performing rituals and interacting with the public.

Kalpavas, a period of spiritual discipline, has seen the participation of over 1 million devotees at the Triveni Sangam, culminating in a final holy dip on Magh Purnima. As per tradition, devotees perform Satyanarayan Katha, Havan Puja, and donate to their Tirthpurohits, concluding their religious observance with a community feast.

Extensive healthcare services have benefited over 700,000 pilgrims. More than 450,000 individuals received treatment at 23 allopathic hospitals, with 3,800 minor and 12 major surgeries successfully completed. Additionally, 20 AYUSH hospitals have provided alternative treatments to over 218,000 visitors. Experts from AIIMS Delhi, IMS BHU, and international specialists have ensured world-class medical assistance.

Aiming to be the cleanest Kumbh Mela ever, authorities have deployed 22,000 sanitation workers and introduced large-scale water treatment measures to keep the river pristine. Strict eco-friendly policies, including plastic bans and biodegradable cutlery, have been enforced, with thousands of bio-toilets and automated garbage disposal units installed under the Swachh Bharat Mission.

The festival also features cultural programs showcasing India’s rich heritage. Renowned classical dancers, folk musicians, and spiritual discourses draw large audiences. Literary gatherings explore ancient scriptures and the philosophy of Sanatan Dharma, while artisans display handicrafts, handloom products, and religious artifacts, turning the Mela into a vibrant cultural confluence. Maha Kumbh 2025 stands as a testament to India’s ability to blend tradition with modernity, providing a spiritually enriching and seamlessly organized experience for millions.
